Weekend Discussion: Scariest moment in gaming

One of my favourite things about the blend between the film and gaming worlds has been the use of spooky cinematography. Fine examples of this are seen in the awesome horror influences in titles the likes of F.E.A.R., Condemned and, of course, Dead Space. This weekend I thought I’d take a look back and remember some of the best scares I’ve had from games.

Show: F.3.A.R. video review – Live from Studio 33

This latest episode from the blood drenched recesses of Studio 33 has given the guys the heebie-jeebies as they take a look at the latest horror-fest, F.3.A.R. Delving deep into the psyches of psychotic siblings, the lads confront their darkest fears and exorcise them with extreme prejudice with liberal doses of buckshot. After a fantastic intro by Josh, Dave was so gripped with terror that he completely muffed the acronym! Nathan generously declined to take the piss at his expense, but luckily the post show editor was more than happy to oblige.

Any fan of the The Fast and the Furious franchise will be aware of how all the hip youngsters are drawn to the ‘clever’ use of numbers in titles; particularly numbers that replace words. DLC is poised to take on the number-in-title-loving F.3.A.R. on this week’s show with a multiplatform perspective on the action/horror shooter. Click here to join the chatroom for some fun, discussion and real views on the state of play in the gaming world. Note that the live video will be kicking off 8pm Tuesday AEST on our live page.

Video: F.3.A.R. mechs lay the smacketh down

The F.E.A.R. franchise certainly has been a mixed bag of tricks. The first outing felt just right, with some genuinely terrifying moments flawlessly executed. The sequel split the community with some loving the inclusion of over-sized and powered mechs to discombobulate and debilitate any enemy before turning them into a blood-splattered smush on the sidewalk and others feeling it went against the grain. I loved them and after seeing them in action earlier this year it’s with joy that I share this vid with you guys so you get a taste as well.
