News: Injustice Red Son skins from Russia with love
Now this is an absolutely inspired gaming and comic book crossover idea. In 2003 Mark Millar (author of Wanted and Kick Ass) delivered a novel alternative take on the Superman mythos. What if the Man of Steel crash landed in the U.S.S.R. instead of the United States?
These tangental series come under the DC Comics Elseworlds banner, which takes heroes you know and love and puts then in completely unique situations. It opened a riveting fresh take on Superman, exploring how he and Lex Luthor became rivals and started their own personal Cold War, rewrote Wonder Woman and Batman’s origins and is still to date one of my favourite series of all time. NetherRealm Studios, the developer of the super-powered brawler Injustice: Gods Among Us is really looking to give comic book fans what they want.
The special edition of the game will come with a Red Son skins pack inspired by the original comics and a completely separate storyline to support it. Now while I question the reasoning behind offering Solomon Grundy as opposed to the Red Son version of Batman depicted to the right, I still love this idea and hope that this the tack all future downloadable content for the game takes. Just speculating on the possibilities is giving the comic book guy within an intense nerdgasm.
Warner Bros recently released this short vignette breaking down the developer’s love for Red Son, why they chose this particular Elseworlds adventure and the decision to include Solomon Grundy as opposed to more obvious choices.
Check it out, it’s well worth a look.
