Discussion: Best and worst melee in gaming

GimliAfter bashing Necromorphs by the dozen in Dead Space 3, I couldn’t help but consider the importance of a strong and responsive melee. Sometimes that last desperate swing can be the difference between life and death. Let’s take a look at some of the best and worst examples.

Have at you!

Have at you!

Best – Dark Souls

Not much of a surprise for those who know me. Dark Souls provides opportunities for melee combat that demand your attention. The odds are often stacked against you, but if you can stay focused on the fundamentals, then Dark Souls gives you one of the most satisfying melees out there.

Just press "X" to awesome!

Just press “X” and you’ll make it out alright

Worst – Assassin’s Creed III

I have never been so bitterly disappointed by oversimplified combat mechanics. In Assassin’s Creed II there is at least a feeling of accomplishment when taking down enemies Assassin’s Creed III, in contrast, neutered the combat so much that it felt like you just mashed buttons to complete melee strikes without any real difficulty. Not fun, at all.

OK people, you’re up. Think about the ones that shine or those positively awful examples.
